Isn't SMS ruining English? (Discussion)

The short forms and language used in SMS typing has brought ruin to the English language itself. Frequent SMS users are not able to write correct English- neither the grammar nor the spellings are correct. Even in the English exams, the students use their ‘SMS language’, and are not able to correct themselves in the future, despite losing marks for the same.

I completely agree. I don’t use SMS myself, and I like to use regular English even when I’m instant messaging (my friends always laugh at me because I insist on capitalizing the beginning of every sentence).

Short-form language does make things faster and simpler at times, but it’s also informal and can easily confuse those who are new to the language. It’s important to be aware of correct, formal spelling if you want to be taken seriously.

People should be made aware of the importance of correct language usage, and as oLahav said it can confuse people and can therefore have different consequences! Sms means short message service, so I don’t think one should be a stickler to the above rule in this case, but exams, e-mails and other official communication tools should have proper English. It is quite imperitive. It is important that schools make the students realize that a language ought to be uniform to avoid confusions in the long run. But then smses can be kept short and sweet as long as it serves the purpose!!!!!!!!!!
